EduPop! – Jefferson Pierce

EduPop! will explore various representations of teachers and educators as they appear in media: novels, movies, television shows, music, etc. Some representations are wonderful, some terrible but all are presented for fun!

Jefferson Pierce

DC Comics’ Black Lightning

DC Comics | 1968 – Present

Jefferson Pierce is the true identity of DC Comics superhero Black Lightening. Black Lightning was one of the first African American superheroes which is special enough, but he is also a superhero who is a high school teacher in his real life! Alternately written as teaching in inner city schools, serving as a superintendent and, finally securing a position in the cabinet of President Lex Luthor (wait, what!?!) as Secretary of Education, Pierce has ever been an example of a hero less concerned with the power of, well power, and more concerned with the power of the mind.
